This Souped-Up Mercedes Is Dubai's Newest Over-The-Top Police Car

brabus b63 s 700

The Dubai Police is adding another exotic vehicle to its stable. This Brabus B63-S 700 Widestar--a tuned version of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG--has debuted at the 2013 Dubai Motor Show in police livery.

With 536 horsepower, the G63's 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 is already pretty potent.

However, Brabus fiddled with it and was able to extract an otherworldly 700 horses.

With that extra power, Brabus says the B63-S 700 Widestar will do 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 149 mph--perfect for pursuit work.

The Brabus-tuned G-Wagen also features a wide body kit and 23-inch wheels. That looks pretty intimidating on top of the stock G-Class' boxy military bodywork, even without the police lights and brush guard.

The Brabus B63-S 700 Widestar police car may seem like a cheesy publicity stunt, but Brabus and the Dubai Police have serious plans for it. The SUV will be used to promote the "Tune It! Safe!" campaign, which started in Germany as a way to encourage drivers to modify their cars in a safe and legal manner. The program is being exported to the United Arab Emirates where, admittedly, there are a lot of modified cars.

While the Brabus G-Wagen is the epitome of over-the-top tuning, it will look positively mundane compared to some of the other cars in the Dubai Police motor pool, which includes a Lamborghini Aventador, Aston Martin One-77, and even a Bugatti Veyron.

The exotic police cars are primarily used for display in prominent tourist areas for promotional purposes.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Daimler said October sales for its Mercedes-Benz premium auto brand reached a new record, growing volume by 15.3 percent to 126,421 cars thanks to high deliveries for its new E-Class model.

In a statement on Wednesday, the company said sales increased in every region with growth driven primarily by the United States where deliveries jumped 25 percent and Turkey, where shipment of cars rose 63 percent.

"Our record sales in October have provided us with a strong start to the fourth quarter, and we have further increased our market share," said Ola Kaellenius, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Carsresponsible for Marketing & Sales.

Acceleration Is Simply Brutal In The Powerful Version Of Mercedes S-Class

The V-8-powered 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG offers up everything you could ever want from a full-size performance sedan, but there’s something about having 12 cylinders nestled under the hood that simply makes a car feel a tad more special.

Enter the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, the V-12-powered AMG variant of the latest-generation S-Class.

The car has already been spotted in the wild, but we’ll get our first look up close when the covers come off at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20. Sales don’t commence until the second quarter of 2014, with pricing details due closer to the sales launch, but expect a substantial jump from the $140,425 starting price of the S63 AMG.

The engine in the new S65 AMG is a familiar one; it’s a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 delivering 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The engine is the same unit fitted to the SL65 AMG and it was also fitted to the previous-generation S65 AMG, although it only had 604 horsepower then.

mercedes2Peak power is delivered over a wide band stretching from 4,800 to 5,400 rpm. Peak torque, meanwhile, all 738 pound-feet of it, is available from as low as 2,300 rpm and doesn’t taper off until 4,300 rpm.

Needless to say, acceleration in the new S65 AMG is brutal. The 0-60 mph run is estimated to take just 4.2 seconds while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Note, the 577-horsepower S63 AMG is slightly quicker to 60, needing just 3.9 seconds. Mercedes hasn’t mentioned whether the S65 AMG will get the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system that the S63 AMG benefits from, so this could explain the slower acceleration. It will still benefit from plenty of technological goodies, however, including lightweight construction, a seven-speed automatic transmission and even an IWC clock.

Matched to the engine is AMG’s SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC, which replaces the five-speed unit of the previous model. This makes a key contribution to reducing the vehicle's fuel consumption, as the engine can now work in more efficient rev bands.

The efficiency of the powertrain is further improved by reduced-friction bearings and transmission oil heat management, and just so you can convince your environmentalist friends you’re not out clubbing baby seals to death on weekends, the car also comes with an engine stop-start system. EPA-rated fuel economy numbers will also be released closer to the sales launch.

The wheels are 20-inch light alloys with a multi-spoke design inspired by the wheels of the legendary 540K of the 1930s, a car whose sweeping curves were the inspiration for the character lines on almost all modern Mercedes models.

The standard brakes feature steel discs while carbon ceramic units are available as an option. The tires measure 255/40 at the front and 285/35 at the rear.

Inside, the car is as luxurious as any other S-Class, perhaps even more so. Nappa leather is fitted throughout and features an exclusive diamond pattern. The seats are special AMG buckets with plenty of adjustment and comfort features. There are also plenty of AMG logos all around the cabin, including in the instrument cluster whose speedometer reaches 220 mph and features the classic “V12 VITURBO” lettering.

Other features worth mentioning are stainless steel pedals, a Burmester premium audio system with 24 speakers, a massage function for the seats, a panoramic sliding sunroof and a surround view camera.

Say Goodbye To The SLS AMG, Perhaps The Coolest Mercedes Of All Time

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

It's hard to find a Mercedes cooler than the SLS AMG, and that makes this a sad day. Car and Driver reports Mercedes-Benz will put an end to the model, wrapping up with a special, final edition it will launch at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

The SLS AMG debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, and made waves with its gullwing doors and style reminiscent of the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. There have been a bunch of different models of the beauty since then, including the Black Series, pictured here.

We're excited to see whatever the Germans create as a send-off, but are still a bit down in the dumps knowing the SLS AMG will soon be a thing of the past.

We Went To Monaco To Try Out Audi's Answer To The $29,900 Mercedes

2015 audi a3

If Monte Carlo had a sister city, would it be Sin City?

Glitzy condo canyons, matte-red Italias parked in no-parking zones, lots of places named "Palace," and an ample supply of two-name celebrities like Roger Moore, Gina Lollobrigida, and Ringo Starr--yup, it all kind of hangs together there, karmically.

I take pleasure in leaving both places, too. In Vegas, it's the existential thrill of you don't have to come back voluntarily.

In this cheese-wedge-sized portion of the principality of Monaco, the pleasure spools out by the kilometer, on the roads draped in herringbones between the quaint 5000-square-foot cottages of the rich and famous. Seriously, it's like the world's most prestigious summer camp up there.

Last week, I got to leave Monte Carlo, and come back, and do the same thing about four or five times. And for a nice change on a European adventure, no times were in the company of five different layers of bureaucracy.

This time I did it in the company of the 2015 Audi S3, the hot compact sedan that's coming out swinging for the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. It won't officially be on sale until summer of 2014, but the S3 is in previews now, as the theater types would say.

Once I could stop making jeu Monegasque references, I dug into those hillsides and darted between those ultra-wealthy crash pads like I was casing them. Careening from Place Du Casino to an even happier place, the S3 proved out my working theory that Audi probably could make a crisp, warm baguette fun to drive, if they could figure out a way to put a transverse powertrain and quattro in one.

Pitch nearly perfect

The S3 comes from the new A3 family of cars, which land ashore next year in the U.S. in all sorts of body styles. There's the sedan, an Avant wagon, a pretty convertible, and a plug-in hybrid hatchback all to come--and we'll throw in the compact Q3 crossover, which isn't as precisely related to the others, but close enough for short attention spans.

Audi's new compact cars will go on sale about six months after rival Mercedes-Benz launches its new 2014 CLA 250 compact four-door and its 355-hp CLA 45 AMG companion piece and the GLA crossover, which it totally lumps together with the others.

With the A3/S3 cars, Audi is resetting the clock to 1994, when the first A4 sedan inaugurated name changes and niche shifts across its lineup. Sized like the VW Golf and part of VW's massive global "MQB" family of transverse-engine compacts, the new A3/S3 sedans are close in size to the first A4. Yes, that's how much cars have grown over the past two decades, people.

But here's the twist: While the other A3 variants get turbodiesel fours, turbocharged fours with as much as 220 horsepower, even plug-in hybrid technology, the S3 blows it out with a high-boost version of the new group 2.0-liter turbo four. Power output hasn't been officially translated to SAE standards, but the S3 should be good for about 290 horsepower, and for a 0-60 mph time of about 4.8 seconds--a performance benchmark just two-tenths of a second shy of the CLA 45 AMG, which sports almost 60 more horsepower.

The new powerplant's a chummy piece. Its torque peak of about 280 pound-feet comes low--just below 2000 rpm--and sails through 5000 rpm unabated, always brapping and chortling out a happy soundtrack. There's ample torque available at just about any speed or in any gear. It pulls terrifically through the dual-clutch transmission, snicking from gear to gear at the touch of a shift paddle, just the way we like it.  Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.

All A3 sedans bound for the U.S., by the way, are supposed to come with the six-speed, dual-clutch transmission. It has one fewer gear than the CLA's seven-speed unit, the extra cogs hardly are missed, what with two or three usable gears always at hand. If you must whine, whine at Audi: they teased us with a six-speed manual transmission on the first drive, and are making some friendly noises toward the save-the-manuals crowd. It would set the S3 apart from CLA45 AMG, at least.

The S3, by the way, runs on a transverse-engine architecture, with a strut front suspension isolated on its own subframe, with a four-link torsion-beam rear suspension used for efficient packaging. It sits about an inch lower than the coming A3, and has a stiffer front structure and suspension tuning to handle the higher cornering loads. Electric power steering is standard, and selectable: the rack's variable effort is controlled by Audi's Drive Select system, which rules over the usual auto, sport, comfort, auto, and dynamic modes, or in the custom-choice individual mode.

Ever since we drove the RS 7 earlier this year, we've been more inclined to try setting the cars in Individual, and leave everything in Dynamic save for Auto damping--which the S3 comes with, optionally. It's a good compromise: the steering's heavy weighting works on kinky mountain roads up and down the mountain, the ones where even a compact car feels a little too big, and the ride quality balances out the upsized tire choices.

In Dynamic setting, our S3's electronically controlled, magnetic-fluid dampers were a little too stiff in the knees, shod with 19-inch ContiSport summer tires as they were. It's something I might feel completely different about Stateside, as was the case with the RS 7 and even with the CLA45 AMG.

No matter: it's a good thing the Drive Select toggle switch sits up high on the dash, easily flicked to comfort or auto mode when you're off the sequential 15-mph hairpins that isolate Monaco from those royalty-slaughtering Huns to the north and west and east.

Looks, space and safety

2015 audi s3 insideThe S3's tidy styling avoids risks, pulling off the usual Audi theme without looking too blunt or tall, which could easily happen on such a short car with such a short wheelbase.

The headlamps have the now-obvious LED running lamps as eyeshadow, with full LED treatment available to turn their keyhole shape into something instantly identifiable in the rearview mirror.

The S3's cabin is a pretty spartan environment, if you're accustomed to the lush wood and leather trimming that's graced cars like the A7 or even the original A4. The leather's real here, but the VW influences are still pretty heady. To wit: those big, round vents that bullet through the dash. They're perfectly executed, with concentric circles that are not like the starred, gimbaled round vents in another car in this segment. What, are they reading off each other's papers?

The S3 gets the better of things with its pop-up LCD screen, though. The fixed, stand-up screens on the latest BMWs and Benzes are more cheaply integrated, and it shows. Not here: the MMI display rotates in and out of the dash, positively dripping color with its Google Earth maps.

As for the interior space, it's a bit of a throwback compared to today's A4 sedan. At 175.9 inches long, on a 103.4-inch wheelbase, the S3 is almost nine inches shorter than the CLA-Class, with nearly three fewer inches of wheelbase--which the Mercedes uses up with its laid-back profile, leaving lots of usable space under the glass. The Audi's marginally wider.

It's notable from the back seat how the S3's doors and roofline make its petite back seat more accessible than the one in the CLA. Neither's a palace, even in a postage-stamp-sized principality like Monaco. I had lots of headroom, but admittedly the S3s driven weren't trimmed with the standard sunroof. At least in the S3, the base red-bolstered seats feel terrific, and complement the flat-bottomed steering wheel. The VW Group controls are hard to miss: there's a lever to raise or lower the seat, a knob to tilt the seatback.

In the back seat, there's the same lack of adult knee room as in the CLA, with easier entry and exit thanks to those regularly shaped doors. It's not a place grown adults will want to gather, but it's made more usable with split/fold seatbacks that expand the 13.7-cubic-foot trunk.

The A3 doesn't rely on body along to protect passengers. It has pre-collision restraint prep, simulated torque vectoring on the front wheels via its anti-lock brakes, and a passel of optional safety technology, including blind spot monitors and adaptive cruise control that maintains a traffic crawl with a tap of the cruise's resume button.

Now featuring not T-Mobile

Every S3 will come with standard power windows, locks, and mirrors; cruise control; leather upholstery; Bluetooth; and a panoramic sunroof.

Audi's MMI system is also standard, with that retractable screen serving as the output destination for the S3's audio and phone systems. MMI now has a wide touch surface on its controller knob, for fingertip text entry--just write out letters, Palm Pilot style, and MMI translates them into destinations or other data. The MMI interface has also been reworked slightly to fit on the S3's console: it now has toggle switches to flip to navigation mode, which conserves space.

Audi Connect will be a key upgrade for the connected class. For a subscription fee, A3 drivers can tap into a 4G/LTE data network that delivers Google Earth maps and other rich feeds to the car--which can even store photos of destinations for use as favorites. Audi Connect enables service to as many as 8 devices, and can stream music from them via local wireless networks it creates.

It can all be rendered through a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with 705 watts of output. A side note for T-Mobile fans, both of you: Audi's giving the data provider the Heisman late this year, and switching to a much bigger carrier for LTE service. You can guess which two players are in that game, right?

The 2015 Audi S3 shows up at American dealers by the summer of 2014, a few months after the $29,990 A3 sedan lands. The S3 hasn't been priced, but hints of about $40,000 have migrated up a little to something more like $42,000--which still would be a massive discount over the CLA 45 AMG's $48,000 pricetag.

Are those savings worth it, even with the AMG's stated 0-60 mph times being a half-second quicker? Or is the CLA45 AMG too pricey for a car that doesn't even have a plan for a manual shifter?

Read more about the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG first drive and decide for yourself. Meanwhile, we'll be busy finding a few days in the calendar to put them back to back, sometime next spring.

Someone's Already Building An Armored Version Of The Mercedes S-Class

transeco armored 2014 mercedes benz s class

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class can protect its occupants from other drivers, and themselves, with a variety of automated safety systems, but can it protect them from gunfire?

The S-Class has always been a popular choice for high-profile people, so it's not surprising that an armored version is already in the works.

Germany's Transeco and its predecessor companies have been in the vehicle-armoring business for 28 years, and has been armoring full-size Mercedes sedans since the 600 Pullman was shiny and new.

MUST READ: First Look At W Motors' Next Model, The Lykan Supersport

Transeco's latest effort features a full armored cage around the passenger compartment, along with an armored underside that can protect against two DM51 grenades. The trunk can even be armored to protect the battery and other electrical components.

Since the armor adds weight, all of the door hinges need to be reinforced, and a self-closing feature is added. Heavy duty suspension components and brakes are also required to deal with the car's 7,319-pound curb weight.

However, the S550's twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V-8 remains unchanged, producing the same 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. While acceleration might be a bit more sluggish than usual, a run-flat tire system will at least ensure the ability to escape from the bad guys. Transeco says the S-Class can drive up to 31 miles at 31 mph with a puncture.

Other handy features include optional reinforced front and rear bumpers, and a self-sealing fuel tank.

The S-Class is the most popular armored vehicle for heads of state, according to Transeco, but it's not the only choice for the rich and paranoid. Mercedes offers an armored M-Class, and previously offered an armored Maybach.

Mercedes-Benz 2015 SLS AMG GT Final Edition

This is a bittersweet moment for car lovers: Mercedes-Benz has just introduced yet another glorious SLS AMG, perhaps the coolest model it has ever produced.

But as the name implies, the SLS AMG GT Final Edition will be the last of its kind.

Unveiled this week at both the Los Angeles Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show, the Final Edition is as gorgeous and powerful as its siblings.

With a 6.3-liter V8 engine, it can go from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 197 mph.

Mercedes hasn't announced pricing yet, but previous versions have cost over $200,000. Since the Germans will build only 350 units of the Final Edition, expect getting one of these to cost you a bit more than that.

To keep its weight down and its performance up, Mercedes pretty much covered the last SLS AMG in carbon fiber, including the hood and rear spoiler.

Under the hood is a 6.3-liter V8 engine, capable of producing 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

That's enough power to go from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, and hit a top speed of 197 mph.

South African Mercedes-Benz Workers Made This Car For Nelson Mandela When He Was Released From Prison

When Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in East London, South Africa paid tribute to the leader with a gift made specially for him: a red S-Class.

In a video produced by Mercedes-Benz South Africa, Philipp Groom, who still works for the automaker, explains that a few days after Mandela's release, they decided to build a car by hand.

They brought the idea to management, who agreed to donate the parts, and the workers offered to build the car during unpaid overtime.

Footage from the plant shows workers dancing and singing in celebration as they work on the car. "All workers wanted to be part of this, they wanted to touch this vehicle," Groom says.

Receiving the red W126 S-Class, Mandela said the color would remind him of the blood spilled by South Africans in the struggle to end the Apartheid system.

The car is now at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.

Here's Groom presenting the car to Mandela:

10 Ads That Companies Were Forced To Apologize For In 2013

$

mountain dew goat tyler the creator

It's widely believed in marketing circles that the era of "the campaign"— a specific media push around a single theme —is over, and brands instead need to be having a conversation with customers 24/7/365 in order to win their loyalty.

But all that chatter also gives brands more opportunities to put their feet in their proverbial mouths. And so it has gone in 2013, a year in which major corporations from AT&T to Unilever have been forced to apologize for ads that were sexist, homophobic, racist, or just plain wrong.

Many of the companies in question claimed they never approved the ads listed here, but it still boggles the mind that any of them were made in the first place.

With this in mind, please enjoy our list of the top 10 most outrageous ads companies were forced to apologize for in 2013:

10. Unilever Brand Can't Think Of Anything More Heartbreaking Than Having Your Kid Come Out Of The Closet

The Unilever margarine brand Flora had some explaining to do back in September after releasing this ad, which compared learning that your son or daughter is gay to taking a bullet to the heart:

flora unilever homophobic ad

In case you can't read it, the bullet says "UHH, DAD I'M GAY," and the text in the bottom right-hand corner reads "You need a strong heart today."

The ad was made by Lowe & Partners Johannesburg to present Flora as a heart-healthy alternative to butter. However, Unilever said it was made by an external agency and that it never saw the ad before it ran.

"This advert was prepared by an external agency in South Africa and was not approved by anyone at Unilever," Unilever said shortly after the ad was released. "The advert is offensive and unacceptable and we have put an immediate stop to it."

9. Mercedes Releases Sexually Suggestive Song About The Relationship Between A Car And Its Mechanic

The Mercedes-Benz service department embarrassed the company this past summer with an in-house music video of a sexually suggestive song about the car's relationship with its mechanic.

Here are some sample lyrics from the song, which is sung by a woman from the perspective of a car: "I like them to be strong, that they can catch me when I skid/ Like them to turn me on, I thought that some of them did/But just as I needed a helping hand, so many men were 'out of service,' not like you … You only give your best, won't stop until I smile."

The video was taken down shortly afterward, with a spokesperson telling Business Insider that the bizarre video was posted on the service department's YouTube channel after it received positive feedback within the company.

"We were very dismayed to see how the Mercedes-Benz service song's video was perceived in some U.S. blogs. Therefore we immediately removed it from all websites we have control over," the spokesperson told Business Insider. "We regret that the video has caused concern and apologize for it. We certainly did not intend to offend anybody."

8. AT&T Seizes Marketing Opportunity On 9/11

On the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, AT&T paid tribute to the fallen by tweeting an image of a Blackberry Z10 taking a photo of the two columns of light at Ground Zero.

at&t twitter 9/11

Though the branding on the phone was covered up, many people expressed the sentiment that every tweet posted by a brand is written with the ultimate goal of selling products. To them, the anniversary of a national tragedy was an inappropriate touchpoint to use in pursuit of this commercial end.

AT&T apologized first with a tweet and then with an open letter from CEO Randall Stephenson.

"I consider that date a solemn occasion each year, a time when I reach out to those I was with on that awful day, share a moment of reflection for the lives lost and express my love of country,"Stephenson wrote of 9/11. "It is a day that should never be forgotten and never, ever commercialized. I commit AT&T to this standard as we move forward."

7. McDonald's Apologizes For Comparing Depression To A Big Mac Craving

Last spring, McDonald's ran an ad on Boston's public transit system that showed a woman crying in the style of anti-suicide public awareness initiatives. Only its ad read: "You're Not Alone. Millions of people love the Big Mac," revealing that the woman is actually crying because she desperately wants a hamburger. The phone number in the bottom right-hand corner leads to McDonald's corporate office.

mcdonald's depression ad

Naturally, people who struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts (or know people who have) were upset. McDonald's said it didn't approve the ad, and both McDonald's and advertising agency Arnold Boston apologized for its insensitive nature.

6. Swiffer Debases A Feminist Icon

Rosie The Riveter, pictured below in an iconic ad by Westinghouse Company, emerged as an icon of female strength during World War II, symbolizing the participation of women who worked in America's factories while the men were fighting overseas.

rosie the riveter

But this context apparently escaped the folks at Swiffer, who released a newspaper ad in June that depicted a modernized version of Rosie proudly brandishing a Swiffer instead of showing off her biceps. In doing so, Swiffer transformed Rosie from a powerful testament to women's capability in the workplace to a posterchild for their traditional domestic duties.

Swiffer responded to the resulting backlash with a pair of apology tweets:swiffer twitter rosie riveter

5. Hyundai Makes Light Of Suicide While Touting Environmentally Friendly Car

Hyundai and its agency Innocean made an ad for the ix35 that showed a depressed man attempting suicide by locking himself in his car with a running exhaust pipe. The kicker is that nothing happens to him because the ix35 emits water, not carbon monoxide, since it is a non-polluting fuel-cell car.

The ad might have been received just fine were it not for the real people who do take their own lives by locking themselves in a car full of carbon monoxide.

A freelance copywriter named Holly Brockwell brought this to Hyundai's attention in a devastating blogpost about how the ad made her recall her father's suicide. Brockwell's letter touched a nerve with people who felt the ad exploited real tragedy to sell cars, and the blogpost was quickly passed around the internet.

Facing a tidal wave of consumer anger, Hyundai apologized shortly after, saying that the ad was created by an affiliated agency without its request or approval.

4. Mountain Dew Partners With Tyler The Creator, Presumably Having Never Heard His Music Before

Since bursting on the scene in 2011 with the eerie, violent hit "Yonkers," (unprintable lyrics here) the rapper Tyler the Creator has carved out a niche for himself as one of the most perverse, explicit, and straight-up nasty artists in the game.

Naturally, Mountain Dew thought Tyler would be the perfect person to handle creative duties on a national advertising campaign.

The result was a flagrantly offensive ad in which a talking goat (voiced by Tyler) intimidates a battered woman out of naming him as her abuser in a police line-up. The other suspects on the lineup were described by the economist and professor Dr. Boyce Watkins as "not just regular black people, but the kinds of ratchety negroes you might find in the middle of any hip-hop minstrel show."

Dr. Watkins' criticism of "arguably the most racist commercial in history" gained traction on the internet, and Mountain Dew ultimately issued an apology. Still, it's sort of incredible to think a major brand gave creative control to a man who's rapped about how he'd "rape a pregnant b----, and tell my friends I had a threesome."

3. Thai Dunkin' Donuts Franchisee Goes With Blackface To Promote 'Charcoal Donut'

Eventually people will learn to stop using blackface, but until then, I suppose we will keep having to write about them every time they do.

In August, Dunkin' Donuts was forced to apologize for an ad by its franchisee in Thailand that used the unfortunate makeup of the minstrel show to promote its chocolate "Charcoal Donut."

Dunkin' Donuts Charcoal Ad

Human Rights Watch called the ad "bizarre and racist," and Dunkin' Donuts apologized. However, the owner of the company's Thai franchise, Nadim Salhani, was recalcitrant.

"We're not allowed to use black to promote our doughnuts? I don't get it," he told the Associated Press. "What's the big fuss? What if the product was white and I painted someone white, would that be racist?"

2. Dating Site's Facebook Ad Uses The Absolute Wrong Thumbnail

The Canadian dating site ionechat.com posted an ad in September that included a photo of a young woman beside an offer to "Meet Canadian girls and women for friendship, dating or relationships."

The problem? The woman in the ad was Rehtaeh Parsons, a 17-year-old girl who'd hanged herself five months earlier after photos of her alleged rape were posted online.

Rehtaeh Parsons in Facebook dating ad

Yikes. Facebook apologized in short order, and banned ionechat.com from advertising on its site.

"This is an extremely unfortunate example of an advertiser scraping an image from the Internet and using it in their ad campaign," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. 1. Ford Can't Escape Awful Berlusconi Bondage Ad

The agency JWT India takes this year's title with one of the most disturbing ads we've ever seen. The a print illustration depicts the notoriously scuzzy Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi driving a Ford Figo with a trunk full of buxom women who have been bound and gagged. If you look closely, you can see that the woman in the schoolgirl outfit is crying.

The ad was not approved by Ford, but wound up on the internet when the creative team responsible sent it to the website Ads of the World. Both Ford and JWT wound up issuing an apology for the ad, which was intended to make light of Berlusconi's many affairs by encouraging customers to "leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot."

Mercedes Made The All-New C-Class Bigger Because People Are Getting Taller

2015 Mercedes-benz C-Class interior

Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to launch the all-new C-Class, and the luxury options and technologies it has packed into the sedan show just how quickly cars are evolving.

The lighter and more fuel-efficient C-Class has a control pad that looks like it was stolen from a spaceship.

It also comes with "GPS-sensitive air conditioning," which protects occupants from breathing filthy air when they drive through a tunnel.

With the Adaptive Highbeam Assist plus, you can keep your brights on without blinding oncoming traffic — it works "by masking out other vehicles in the cone of light."

The C-Class will also come with the "active fragrancing and ionisation" that it debuted in the 2014 S-Class this year. Basically, it's an active odor system that keeps your car smelling as fancy as it should.

The C-Class is matching human evolution, too: It's 3.74 inches longer than the outgoing model, "to take account of people's increasing average height."

Since the 1870s, the average height of European men has increased by over 4 inches, according to Britain's National History Museum.

Among Mercedes sedans, the C-Class is a step above the CLA-Class, which now starts for under $30,000. It's below the fancier E-Class and S-Class, which cost $51,400 and $92,900, respectively.

The new sedan will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. Pricing has not been announced, but the current C-Class starts for $35,800.

Mercedes-Benz Is Cranking Up Production To Match Record Sales

daimler mercedes-benz hood ornament factory assembly

BERLIN (Reuters) - Daimler's <DAIGn.DE> Mercedes-Benz division will push output to a new record this year as German plants are running extra shifts to meet strong demand for new compact models as well as the overhauled S-Class flagship sedan.

Production of Mercedes-Benz models will exceed 1.49 million cars this year, the third straight annual record, the carmaker said on Tuesday.

Mercedes is expanding production as auto demand in core European markets is stabilizing. New car sales in the European Union and European Free Trade Association posted their third monthly gain in November, boosting carmakers' hopes of a rebound in 2014 after six consecutive years of decline.

Workers assembling the new C-Class model in Bremen are running 10 extra shifts in November and December, while staff in Rastatt put in 21 additional shifts on production of A-Class and B-Class compacts in the first eleven months, the carmaker said.

Assembly times for the S-Class have been lengthened since early November and will be extended further in 2014.

Global sales of Mercedes-Benz models rose to their highest-ever level in November, powered by double-digit growth in the United States and China. Year-to-date deliveries were up 10.7 percent at a record 1.32 million autos.

Mercedes dropped into third place in the global luxury-sales race behind Volkswagen's <VOWG_p.DE> Audi and BMW <BMWG.DE> in 2011, though is counting on a plan to roll out 13 all-new models by 2020 to help it surpass its German rivals.

Jaguar's Response To A Great Mercedes Commercial Involves Killing A Chicken

In September, Mercedes-Benz scored a YouTube hit with a commercial in which chickens, held up by people, dance while their heads remain still.

It was a great way to promote the automaker's "Magic Body Control" technology. The car scans the road surface ahead and adjusts the suspension to keep the occupants' ride level stable — the body moves, the head doesn't.

Prompted by the success of the Mercedes ad, Jaguar Land Rover has responded with a parody version: A man makes a chicken dance, saying "See, it's just like a Mercedes." Then the chicken is promptly eaten by a Jaguar.

Text appears: "Magic Body Control? We prefer cat-like reflexes."

In an email, a Jaguar rep gave credit to the creative team at Mercedes, and describes its own video as "an alternate, Jaguar, point of view."

Here's the Jaguar version:

This Twin-Turbocharged Mercedes SLS AMG Shoots A Whole Lot Of Fire [VIDEO]

The guys at RADO Motorsports tuning this twin-turbocharged 850-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG might want to have a look at their decel map, judging by what happens as soon as they lift off the throttle on the dyno in this video.

And yes, there's a dude sitting in the trunk (probably to aid traction on the dyno roller) who nearly gets roasted in the process. He flinches from the flames as any moderately sane person would; it's not his reaction that's crazy.

It's the flames.

RADO, run by Chris Rado, who also heads up WORLD Racing and WORLD Motorsports, is hugely experienced with tuning Mercedes-Benzes, of course, and certainly has the SLS AMG's fire-spitting tendencies under control by now--but we thank them for the display anyway.

Now, anyone have any chestnuts?

Audi Thinks Driving A Luxury Car Is Like Losing Your Virginity — And Urges Abstinence

Audi luxury car abstinence ad

It would seem that an ad based on the idea of abstinence would be the absolute wrong way to target young professionals in 2014, but that's exactly what Audi has done in a new ad bashing competitors BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The ad is titled "Luxury Car Abstinence" and shows various well-to-do young people speaking to the camera about their struggles to resist the temptation of driving a shiny new Beamer or Benz.

Instead, they profess a desire to wait for a more meaningful human-car relationship, with an Audi. At the end, rock music plays alongside footage of the new Audi A3, and viewers are told "Don't regret your first luxury car. The uncompromised Audi A3."

Highlights include a man with his face blurred out describing how his life was ruined by a tryst with a non-Audi, and another man who quits a new job because the company car it offered him was a Mercedes-Benz.

The upshot, apparently, is that everyone who drives a BMW is a slut, and anyone willing to accept a free Mercedes-Benz is a tasteless pauper willing to humiliate themselves just to get from point A to point B.

2014 mercedes benz v class

Mercedes-Benz’s R-Class may not have been a success but the German automaker is giving the luxury MPV segment another go, unveiling today the all-new V-Class.

The vehicle has not yet been confirmed for the U.S., but there are indications it may come eventually.

So what exactly is the V-Class? The latest Benz is a full-size MPV catering to families and shuttle bus operators looking to haul upwards of eight people in luxury and comfort.

A rugged and more utilitarian version, which will likely be called the Vito, is also in the works and will be aimed at commercial buyers looking for something smaller than Mercedes’ existing Sprinter van.

mercedes v classBeing a Mercedes, the V-Class boasts an extensive range of features currently not found in the MPV segment.

These include a system to keep a vehicle straight in heavy crosswinds, a system to detect if the driver is nodding off, and a touchpad control surface for the infotainment system.

A 360-degree camera is also available in addition to some parking aids.

At launch, the vehicle will be available with just one engine, a 2.1-liter turbodiesel, although three different outputs will be on offer: 136, 163 and 190 horsepower.

mercedes v classThe new V-Class makes its official debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in early March and will be available to order soon after for customers in Europe. Production of the V-Class range will take place at Mercedes’ plant in Vitoria, Spain.

Mercedes Is Putting A Diesel Engine In Its Flagship S-Class Sedan

2014 mercedes benz s350 bluetec hybrid

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its S-Class family with two new fuel-efficient options, though neither have been confirmed for the U.S. market yet. The two models are the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid and S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, the latter of which is likely to arrive here as a replacement for its previous-generation model.

The S300 BlueTEC Hybrid is a diesel-electric hybrid version of the latest S-Class and features a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel paired in parallel with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission. The engine produces 204 horsepower on its own while the electric motor adds an additional 20 kilowatts (26 horsepower).

Unlike the previously announced S500 Plug-In Hybrid, the electric motor in the S300 BlueTEC Hybrid can’t drive the vehicle on its own for any reasonable distance. It assists the engine when the car is accelerating and, in alternator mode, is used for the recuperation of braking energy. Mercedes boasts a fuel economy of about 54 mpg for the European combined cycle. Note, EPA testing tends to be slightly harsher on results.

The S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, meanwhile, features a 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel paired with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The engine delivers 258 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque, and in the S-Class returns a fuel economy of about 40 mpg for the European combined cycle.

Though it’s yet to be confirmed for the U.S. market, the S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC should arrive in local showrooms as a 2015 model. This means it will benefit from 2015 model year upgrades for the S-Class such as a head-up display, touchpad controller, and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS safety system.

Prince Alwaleed Emphatically Denies Ownership Of Diamond-Encrusted Mercedes Benz

Prince Alwaleed

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal does not and has absolutely never owned a diamond-encrusted Mercedes Benz, says a statement from his investment firm, Kingdom Holdings.

Pictures associating Alwaleed with a Mercedes-Benz SL 600 adorned with 300,000 Swarovski crystals hit the internet back in 2010. From then on, his ownership of the car became kind of an urban legend.

Stories said he would charge people $1,000 just to touch it.

The rumor even caught on with some Middle Eastern media sources.

Well Alwaleed had it with that, and now the prince would like to clarify that the car is and was not ever his.

"The Private office of Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal would like to state officially that HRH Prince Alwaleed does not, and never has, owned or had any association with a 'diamond-encrusted Mercedes-Benz'" says the Kingdom Holdings release.

"We would like to put this popular myth to rest. Any entity with questions about the Mercedes pictured in these erroneous reports should contact Garson/D.A.D, which appears to have manufactured and displayed a crystal-encrusted Mercedes-Benz SL 600, adorned with 300,000 Swarovski crystals, at various auto shows in the U.S. several years ago."

Alwaleed has come under fire in the past from Forbes magazine for overstating his wealth. If you believe that, then it's hard to believe he would deny owning a car that reportedly costs between $1 and $4 million.

The Headlights In The New Mercedes S-Class Coupe Are Packed With Swarovski Crystals

2015 S Class Coupe (5)

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its 2015 S-Class Coupe, the two-door version of its flagship sedan, ahead of the Geneva Motor Show next month.

It's no surprise the sporty new car is packed with luxury features like a heated armrest (optional) and the AIR-BALANCE system that keeps the interior smelling exactly how the owner wants (standard).

But Mercedes saved one of the cooler touches for the headlights — each of which is stuffed with 47 Swarovski crystals.

On the Edition 1 S550 version of the coupe, 17 angular crystals make up the daytime running lamps, and 30 round crystals form the turn signal lamps.

Based on the information from Mercedes, there's no technological advantage here (the crystals work in combination with Mercedes' LED Intelligent Light System), but the fancier material does "lend [the car] an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze."

Mercedes has not revealed pricing for the S-Class Coupe, but the sedan version starts for $92,000. So the buyer had better be "self-assured" about his or her bank account before making the purchase.

This isn't the first time we've seen Swarovski crystals on a Mercedes. A few years ago, custom car company Garson/D.A.D showed off Mercedes-Benz SL 600 adorned with 300,000 Swarovski crystals. More recently, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal emphatically denied he owns one of these. Maybe he'll pick up an S-Class Coupe instead.

2015 S Class Coupe (18)

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the 2015 S-Class Coupe, and it's very exciting. On top of great looks inside and out, the two-door version of the German automaker's flagship sedan is chock full of technologies that promise to make it both luxurious and a beast on the road.

Mercedes offers the choice to get headlights packed with 47 Swarovski crystals, but the more impressive technology can't be spotted until the coupe heads into a turn.

This is the world premiere of the "active curve tilting function," which makes the car lean into turns, like a motorcyclist or skier. That improves performance and keeps passengers seated more securely on hard curves — making sporty driving even more pleasurable.

The S-Class Coupe, which seats four, will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Expect Mercedes to announce pricing closer to its market launch this fall.

Mercedes-Benz has been making large coupes since 1952. It's an unusual way to combine size, luxury, and sporty driving characteristics.

At 16.5 feet long, the 2015 S-Class Coupe is just gorgeous.

It will sit on wheels between 18- and 20-inches big.

A Wonderful Craigslist Ad Will Make You Want To Spend $3,000 On A 27-Year-Old Mercedes

$

1980s mercedes-benz sel

The over-the-top Craiglist ad is an art form, and we've seen some impressive works from those looking to sell fixed gear bikes and a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT.

The latest entry into the Pantheon on crazy good Craigslist ads comes from Dallas, and it's for a 1987 Mercedes-Benz SEL 560.

So why should you spend $2,750 on a 27-year-old car with more than 220,000 miles on the odometer?

Here are some choice quotes from the ad, edited for profanity:

Yes, it was awesome. . . and this one still is. Why? Because it is a 27-year old vintage road-treasure that has seen four presidents, the invention of Al Gore's Internet and the rise, fall and death of Kurt Cobain. It's old enough to vote, get an MBA and Botox, travel around Europe and move out of its parents' garage. It also has about 237,000 original miles. I say 'about' since the speedometer stopped working at 222,060 miles -- but why should you care? Because that's the mother-f---ing distance to the MOON! Yes. This car has basically been driven to and PAST the freaking moon -- THE ONE IN SPACE.

On drive quality:

I have personally driven this car from San Diego to Dallas on an almost non-stop road trip. The steering wheel is big, fluid and offers just enough resistance and connection to the road to give you the impression that you are not only in charge of the car, but also of your entire life's destiny.Driving it for any distance is empowering and can make you feel you can go anywhere. In fact, this car has plowed effortlessly through Death Valley, dodged falling rocks in Arizona, stared into the depth's of the Grand Canyon and climbed mountainous icy hills in Colorado.

On reliability:

One of the most outstanding features of this car is that it starts -- anytime, anywhere. Whether it's 105* or -5*, F the car's engine turns over and roars to life with one simple twist of the key. There's no fumbling, cranking, pumping the pedal, stalling or waiting for the zombies to come and kill you. Fact: This car would NEVER be featured as a get-away-car in a zombie horror film because it would get you away from whatever is trying to eat, dissolve, melt, vaporize, mate, shoot or kill you.

On air conditioning:

On this particular model, the AC works as long as you fill it with Freon each and every freaking summer. Alternatively, I'd suggest dressing cool and opening up the huge sunroof to let God's air cool you down.Seersucker is a very cool fabric and a dripping of timeless style AND it looks smashing with this car. During the winter, prepare to warm the flesh off your buns with the seat warmers, which are tucked underneath the blue, aged leather seats.

Here's the car in question:
